It's seven o'clock, the light is still dim, and putting on these socks feels almost like a learned gesture from somewhere else, a tea house or a silent dojo. The toe split forces you to slow down for a second, to adjust the fabric before slipping your foot into a sandal. Under raw denim or a flowing dress, the ribbed band that goes up the calf adds that little detail that catches the eye without ever shouting. You find them as much in a minimalist Tokyo bedroom as in a Parisian apartment, worn with mules or simple flip-flops in summer.
Care, sizes and good occasions to wear them
These tabi socks can be machine washed at a low temperature, without fabric softener if you want to keep the knit texture crisp. The one-size-fits-most suits most shoe sizes thanks to the elasticity of the knit, from about 36 to 42, for both men's and women's feet. They are worn with Japanese sandals for traditional use, or slipped into leather mules for a more urban look. Many also adopt them for home, in winter, under wide-leg pants, simply for the comfort of the material against the skin. The toe split, once tried, quickly becomes hard to give up.
